Participants of the IMF-World Bank Annual meetings have praised Indonesia’s various accomplishments, including the spirit of sharing, friendliness and resilience as well as Indonesia’s sound response to various natural disasters. That was the key message of the National Committee, IMF and World Bank at the joint press conference held today (14/10) in Bali. The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani, IMF Managing Director, Christine Lagarde and President of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, were also present at the press conference.

Christine Lagarde also heaped praise on Indonesia’s achievements. According to the IMF chief, the extraordinary accomplishments began three years ago when Indonesia was selected from various candidates to host the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in 2018. Madame Lagarde’s fondest memories were visiting Lombok, planting coral reefs in Nusa Dua and President Joko Widodo’s speech heard around the world. Furthermore, Christine Lagarde also mentioned the thousands of smiles and endless friendly faces of hope and optimism she encountered during her stay in Indonesia.

The President of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, expressed admiration for the way that Indonesians responded to natural disasters, while simultaneously organising and hosting international events. One of the overarching global issues currently faced is a lack of solidarity but Indonesia has inspired the rest of the world on the importance of solidarity. Nobody in Indonesia, not even the poorest of the Poor, are forgotten. Jim Yong Kim also took the opportunity to reiterate the World Bank’s avowed commitment to supporting disaster recovery efforts in Lombok and Central Sulawesi.

The National Committee expressed their utmost appreciation to all those involved with the preparations and implementation of the Annual Meetings. The Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, stated that solid coordination within the Committee was the key to success. The 2018 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings portrayed Indonesia as a reformed, resilient and progressive international player. The BI Governor also thanked all parties for their continued support, including the National Committee, liaison officers, volunteers and mass media, who have raised the international image of Indonesia.
