BRICS countries are advocating stronger resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability as the foundations for addressing global challenges. Such efforts are becoming increasingly important amid geopolitical dynamics, the rapid development of technology and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as increasing climate change risks. These issues were discussed at the 1st BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting, entitled “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability", held in Jaipur, India, on 12-13th August 2026. Indonesia was represented by Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Filianingsih Hendarta and Vice Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia Juda Agung, who delivered Indonesia's views on promoting stronger cooperation within the BRICS framework. The meeting was also attended by central bank and finance ministry leaders from BRICS member countries, namely Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran.

Deputy Governor Filianingsih emphasised the importance of concrete cooperation to strengthen economic and financial resilience, including through the use of local currencies and cross-border payment system connectivity. Such cooperation can bolster resilience against external shocks while taking into account the readiness and conditions of each country.

“Bank Indonesia encourages BRICS countries to not only become users of AI, but also innovators and active contributors by strengthening domestic research and capacity," stated Deputy Governor Filianingsih. She also highlighted the importance of cooperation in addressing cyber and climate change risks to build resilient, inclusive and sustainable economic and financial systems.

At the forum, Indonesia, through coordination between the Ministry of Finance and Bank Indonesia, also encouraged the development of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), greater access to climate financing for developing countries, as well as digital and AI transformation in accordance with the respective stages of development in each country. Indonesia also advocated a stronger role for developing countries in global economic governance, including by strengthening the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the global financial safety net.

The meeting is part of the finance track under India's BRICS Presidency in 2026, which aims to strengthen cooperation and collective responses to global economic challenges. Bank Indonesia will continue strengthening synergy and international cooperation to support economic and financial resilience in Indonesia.
