As part of Indonesia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023, Bank Indonesia in synergy with the Bank of England (BOE) are hosting the hybrid BI-BOE Central Bank Workshop on Enhancing Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), Integrating Cross-Border Payment Systems, and Exploring Central-Bank Digital Currencies (CBBC) on 8-10th March in Jakarta. The activity is supported by close collaboration among ASEAN central banks, specifically Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Bank of Thailand (BOT). The workshop is the manifestation of central bank synergy as a continuation of the G20 priority agenda, namely the Financial Sector and Payment System in the Digital Era, which has been adopted as a Priority Economic Deliverable (PED) of Indonesia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023. Furthermore, the workshop is also part of the BI-BOE Structured Bilateral Cooperation (SBC) program, which has been run since 2019 with the support of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, of the Government of the United Kingdom.
Through this forum, central banks share their experiences in terms of developing payment connectivity and digital finance to support inclusive economic growth. The 3-day workshop is discussing a range of topics covering the latest issues regarding payment systems and financial digitalisation at the global and regional levels, which includes the latest RTGS innovations and developments, CBDC development in various jurisdictions, exploring the choice of supporting technologies and CBDC from a policy perspective, as well as cross-border payments.
Attending the workshop are Rudi B. Hutabarat, Head of the BI International Department, Owen Jenkins, British Ambassador, Victoria Cleland, Executive Director, BOE, as well as speakers from the BOE, BI and other ASEAN-5 central banks, namely MAS, BOT, BSP, and BNM, with the Reserve Bank of India, BIS Innovation Hub London, and Finmark Trust.
