Indonesia and South Korea Officially Connect with QR Payments, Enabling More Convenient, Affordable and Faster Cross-Border Transactions

Press Releases

No. 28/68/DKom

Bank Indonesia and the Bank of Korea have officially launched the Indonesia-South Korea QR Cross-Border Payment Linkage, which allows Indonesians to do payment transactions in South Korea using QRIS via domestic applications[1] without the need to exchange foreign currency. Transactions are conducted directly in the local currencies of both countries, making them more efficient and cost-effective. The initiative is part of the Joint Vision Statement (JVS) between President Prabowo and President Lee Jae Myung, signed today in South Korea (01/04). The official launch was officiated by the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, and  Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea, Sangdai Ryoo, and marked by simultaneous processions in Indonesia and South Korea (01/04/26) to signify the official launch and use of QR Cross-Border between the two countries.

The Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, took the opportunity to acknowledge the inauguration as an important step in realising the shared vision of Indonesia and South Korea to build an integrated, efficient and inclusive payment system as the foundation of digital economic connectivity between the two countries. “Connecting QR Cross-Border payments not only facilitates more convenient transactions but also strengthens micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), boosts tourism and unlocks new business opportunities, thus supporting inclusive and sustainable growth," stated Governor Perry.

Echoing those sentiments, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea, Chang Cheong-soo, recognised the inauguration of the Indonesia-South Korea QR Cross-Border Payment Linkage as an important milestone, reflecting closer cooperation between the two countries, particularly in strengthening the digital economy and finance. “Going forward, we are firmly committed to fostering more strategic collaborations to strengthen payment system integration and support closer digital economic connectivity between South Korea and Indonesia," he said.

The inauguration procession in Jakarta was held at Bank Indonesia, attended by the Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Filianingsih Hendarta, as well as the Minister & Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Indonesia, Park Soo-deok. In Seoul, the ceremony was held at the Bank of Korea, attended by the Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Aida S. Budiman, together with the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Korea, Chang Cheong-soo. The successful implementation of QRIS Cross-Border between Indonesia and South Korea is the result of synergy between Bank Indonesia, Bank of Korea, Indonesia Payment System Association (ASPI) (including payment system infrastructure providers as members of ASPI[2]), Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute (KFTC), as well as participating financial institutions. Bank Indonesia and Bank of Korea are committed to maintaining secure, reliable and efficient cross-border payment systems to strengthen financial resilience and support inclusive growth.

QRIS has become a key driver of digital payment transformation, while strengthening Indonesia's economic sovereignty, with the number of users reaching 60.77 million in February 2026. Furthermore, the use of QRIS Cross-Border continues to increase in various partner countries. Overall, the frequency of transactions by foreign tourists in Indonesia (inbound) exceeds that of Indonesians abroad (outbound). In 2025, inbound transactions were recorded at 5,892,621, significantly higher than outbound transactions at 1,681,112, thus reflecting the positive impact of QRIS Cross-Border on the domestic economy.

As of February 2026, payment connectivity with Thailand since August 2022 has recorded 1.64 million transactions with a value of Rp656.27 billion. Meanwhile, such cooperation with Malaysia, which began in May 2023, has recorded a larger transaction volume of 10.66 million with a value of Rp2.75 trillion. Furthermore, QRIS Cross-Border with Singapore, launched in November 2023, has recorded 554,510 transactions with a value of Rp179.28 billion. Finally, the newest payment link with Japan, established in August 2025, has also performed well, totalling 5,088 transactions with a value of Rp428.80 million.
