Retail sales are predicted to maintain growth in March 2025. This was reflected by a Real Sales Index (RSI) of 236.7 in March 2025, with annual growth of 0.5% (yoy). Retail sales performance in March 2025 was primarily supported by growth of Spare Parts and Accessories, Cultural and Recreational Goods, as well as Food, Beverages and Tobacco. On a monthly basis, respondents predict 8.3% (mtm) retail sales growth in March 2025, accelerating from the previous month. Most commodity groups recorded higher sales, particularly Information and Communication Equipment, Food, Beverages and Tobacco, as well as Clothing. The increase was consistent with a seasonal spike in demand during the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr festive period, as well as retailer discount pricing strategies.
The RSI in February 2025 was recorded at 218.5, with annual growth accelerating to 2.0% (yoy) from 0.5% (yoy) in January 2025. The uptick was primarily driven by Cultural and Recreational Goods, Automotive Fuel, and Clothing. On a monthly basis, retail sales in February 2025 grew 3.3% (mtm), a higher increase compared to the contraction of 4.7% (mtm) the month earlier. This was supported by Clothing, Food, Beverages and Tobacco as well as Automotive Fuel in line with higher demand ahead of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
In terms of prices, respondents predict milder inflationary pressures in the next 3 months (May 2025) and relatively stable price pressures in the next 6 months (August 2025). This was reflected by a decrease in the Price Expectations Index (PEI) in May 2025 to 148.3 from 159.6 in the previous period, accompanied by a relatively stable PEI in August 2025 at 155.5 compared with 155.4 in the previous period.
