Respondents of the latest Retail Sales Survey conducted by Bank Indonesia predict retail sales in April 2024 to continue growing on an annual and monthly basis, as reflected by a Real Sales Index (RSI) of 243.2, growing 0.1% (yoy). Retailers expect Spare Parts and Accessories, Automotive Fuel, as well as Food, Beverages, and Tobacco to be the main drivers of positive retail sales performance. On a monthly basis, respondents predict 3.3% (mtm) retail sales growth, supported by Information and Communication Equipment as well as Food, Beverages, and Tobacco, in response to increasing community activity during the Eid-ul-Fitr national religious holiday.
In March 2024, the RSI recorded 9.3% (yoy) growth to reach a level of 235.4, buoyed by strong retail sales performance led by increasing growth of Clothing, followed by Spare Parts and Accessories, as well as Food, Beverages, and Tobacco. On a monthly basis, retail sales posted 9.9% (mtm) growth, driven by Clothing, followed by Information and Communication Equipment, Spare Parts and Accessories, as well as Food, Beverages, and Tobacco in line with increasing community activity during the holy fasting month of Ramadan and in preparation for the Eid-ul-Fitr national religious holiday, accompanied by various discount pricing strategies.
In terms of prices, respondents predict milder inflationary pressures in June and September 2024, as reflected by respective decreases in the Price Expectations Index (PEI) to 140.1 and 134.5 from 146.1 and 136.9 the month earlier.
