Press Releases

No: 28/89/DKom

Indonesia requires innovative digital talent capable of creating practical solutions to support the transformation of the national digital economy and finance towards Indonesia 2045. “Today's PIDI launch generates momentum for us all to evolve, to learn, and to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) for various beneficial purposes," stated Bank Indonesia Governor, Perry Warjiyo, at the launch of the Indonesia Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI): Digdaya x Hackathon at Bank Indonesia in Jakarta (30/04/26). The launch was witnessed by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture and conducted in collaboration with the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Indonesia Payment System Association (ASPI), Indonesia FinTech Association (Aftech), Indonesia Money Market and Foreign Exchange Market Association (APUVINDO) and Indonesian Banking Development Institute (LPPI). The launch was also attended by 800 PIDI participating teams. Bank Indonesia and the People's Bank of China (PBoC) also inaugurated the implementation of QRIS Cross-Border between Indonesia and China, as witnessed by the Ambassador of China to Indonesia, Wang Lutong.

The Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, emphasised the importance of ensuring that innovation delivers meaningful and tangible impact, supported by talent capable of directing the appropriate use of technology. “Innovation is important, but meaning must not be overlooked. Innovation should drive progress to ensure that technology has meaning. Technology must be guided by its pilots," Pratikno stated. He also highlighted the importance of the Tech for Humanity approach, whereby solutions are not only technically superior yet also oriented towards public interest and human values. Amid accelerating digital and AI utilisation, the Government has also initiated an Integrated National AI Strategy Task Force to hasten Indonesia's readiness in addressing the disruptions emerging from artificial intelligence.

The PIDI launch was also marked by the inauguration of QRIS Cross-Border between Indonesia and China. “Indonesia is not only capable of creating innovation, but also able to execute it globally. QRIS Cross-Border represents a real example of domestic innovation developed and expanded for cross-border utilisation," Governor Perry added. Collaboration between Bank Indonesia, the People's Bank of China (PBoC), ASPI and the payment system industry in both countries is directed towards creating seamless, efficient and inclusive payment connectivity. The implementation of QRIS Cross-Border between Indonesia and China also strengthens existing commitment to using local currencies in cross-border transactions (Local Currency Transactions - LCT), thereby minimising exchange rate volatility risk and promoting more efficient trade and investment flows between the two countries.

In his remarks, Ambassador Wang confirmed that the Chinese Government recognises the importance of adapting to innovation and technology and continues investing in artificial intelligence. He also reaffirmed the Chinese Government's commitment to supporting greater acceptance and participation in the QRIS Cross-Border initiative between Indonesia and China.

In line with rapid digital innovation, digital payment transactions in the first quarter of 2026 reached 14.82 billion transactions, growing 37.69% (yoy), including QRIS transactions, which recorded strong growth of 116.43% (yoy). Since the launch in 2020 until the first quarter of 2026, QRIS acceptance has expanded to 44 million merchants, predominantly MSMEs, and 61.7 million users. Meanwhile, QRIS has supported 31 billion transactions with a total value of Rp2,970 trillion.

Cross-Border QRIS performance has also tracked a positive trend. The volume and value of transactions conducted by international travellers in Indonesia (inbound) exceeded those of Indonesian residents abroad (outbound). In the first quarter of 2026, total inbound QRIS transaction volume reached 2.79 million, increasing 222% (yoy), with a value of Rp713.59 billion. Meanwhile, outbound QRIS transactions also increased to 737,647 transactions, with a value of Rp249.26 billion. Such developments reflect the growing demand for and utilisation of QRIS in cross-border transactions. This also highlights the importance of strengthening innovation and digital talent readiness to ensure that digital transformation delivers value added to the national economy.

The Indonesia Digital Innovation Centre (PIDI): Digital Talenta Berdaya dan Berkarya (DIGDAYA) and Hackathon program equips digital talent with enhanced technical capabilities in digital innovation and entrepreneurship. Through the program, participants are trained to understand market needs and develop relevant solutions. Since inception, young innovators have demonstrated strong enthusiasm, as reflected by more than 2,000 proposals, representing a near two-fold increase from 2025. Following a rigorous selection process, 800 teams were selected to proceed to the initial stage. Further refining their innovative ideas, the teams will participate in training programs based on the real needs of the industry, including essential training, practitioner training and capstone projects. PIDI participants will also be facilitated through business matching to ensure that the innovations developed can progress beyond the prototype stage and are implemented in industry. Through PIDI, Bank Indonesia seeks to provide a platform for the younger generation to contribute directly to the development of the national digital economy and finance. Collaboration between authorities, businesses and the nation's young talent underscores the shared commitment to build an integrated digital economic structure that is robust, secure and globally competitive.
