Bank Indonesia (BI) and Banco Central de Timor-Leste (BCTL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen relations and cooperation between the two central banks in the areas of payment systems and digital financial innovation. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Destry Damayanti, and Governor of BCTL, Hélder Lopes, during the Indonesia Digital Economy and Finance Festival and Indonesia Fintech Summit and Expo 2026 (FEKDI x IFSE 2026) in Jakarta on 25th September 2026.
BI and BCTL are firmly committed to strengthening cooperation in payment and settlement systems as well as digital financial innovation, including through information exchange and stronger relations between the two central banks. The agreement provides a solid foundation for developing payment connectivity between Indonesia and Timor-Leste, which includes exploring QRIS Cross-Border as one form of implementation of the cooperation. The initiative is expected to support transactions and economic activity between the two countries, while facilitating simpler, more efficient, secure and inclusive cross-border payments.
