QRIS Officially Available for Use in Japan

Press Releases

No. 27/191/DKom

QRIS can now officially be used in Japan, launched on the 80th Anniversary of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia (17/08). The official use of Quick Response Code Indonesia Standard (QRIS) in Japan marks the expansion of QRIS beyond the ASEAN region, following existing cooperation with Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Initially, Indonesians can use QRIS at 35 merchants in Japan by scanning the “JPQR Global" code via their domestic payment application.[1] QRIS expansion is possible through synergy between Bank Indonesia and the Indonesia Payment System Association (ASPI), which is expected to provide greater transaction convenience and efficiency for public, while improving economic relations between Indonesia and Japan.

Moving forward, QRIS coverage in Japan will expand to more merchants, thus making it more convenient for Indonesians to make transaction in Japan using QRIS through Indonesian payment application. Furthermore, the implementation will also be expanded to merchants in Indonesia, thus allowing Japanese travellers to make transaction in Indonesia by scanning a QRIS code using Japanese payment applications.

At the ceremony, Bank Indonesia Governor, Perry Warjiyo, stated that Indonesia has once again achieved an important milestone in the history of the national payment system through the expansion of innovation that facilitates convenient cross-border transactions for the public. “Since launch six years ago, QRIS has been a game changer for the digital payment ecosystem and strengthened economic sovereignty in Indonesia, with the number of QRIS users reaching 57 million. Bank Indonesia continues to develop innovative QRIS features to expand acceptance and support digital economic and financial inclusion. One such innovative feature is QRIS Cross-Border." This initiative demonstrates the firm commitment of Bank Indonesia and the payment system industry to continue expanding the digital payment network internationally.

At the same time, Bank Indonesia and the People's Bank of China (PBoC) also began conducting trials for QRIS linkages between Indonesia and China. QRIS expansion to China will be implemented after all preparations and testing have been completed successfully. Payment connectivity with China will facilitate more efficient cross-border trade, particularly for MSMEs, while driving tourism sector growth in both countries. The trials will involve ASPI, UnionPay International (UPI) and representatives from payment system service providers.

As of June 2025, QRIS Cross-Border implementation has remained very encouraging. QRIS Cross-Border cooperation with Thailand has recorded 994,890 transactions with a value of Rp437.54 billion since launch in August 2022. Meanwhile, the volume of cross-border QRIS transactions between Indonesia and Malaysia has reached 4.31 million transactions with a value of Rp1.15 trillion since launch in May 2023 and cross-border QRIS transactions with Singapore, which launched on 17th November 2023, has recorded 238,216 transactions with a value of Rp77.06 billion.

The successful launch of QRIS Cross-Border between Indonesia and Japan is the result of collaboration between Bank Indonesia and ASPI (including payment system infrastructure operators as ASPI members[2]), Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Payments Japan Association (PJA), Netstars[3] as well as participating financial institutions in both countries. Bank Indonesia remains firmly committed to continuing collaboration with the payment system industry and the public to expand QRIS acceptance, supported by the continuous development of innovative QRIS features and the expansion of domestic and international cooperation.
