Economic Financing Opportunities from Domestic Retail Investors are Growing

Press Releases

No. 23/203/DKom

The retail investor base in Indonesia has grown impressively and represents a massive economic financing potential. As of June 2021, the number of retail investors in Indonesia grew 125% to reach 5.6 million compared with 2.5 million in 2019. That was a key finding of Series 3 of the Like It Financial Literacy Program, entitled “Building the Country Together as Investors in Our Country”, held today (13/8) virtually. In her closing remarks, the Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Destry Damayanti, urged the younger generation, millennials in particular, to contribute to Indonesia's financial markets and develop the country as investors. A larger contribution by domestic investors ensures that development financing is easier to secure and financial system stability is easier to maintain in the face of global uncertainty.

Domestic investor potential, retail investors in particular, must be accompanied by adequate understanding of various financial instruments, along with wise financial management and knowledge of how to invest. Implementation of the Like It program is a joint effort to increase financial literacy amongst millennials and the public in general and expand the retail investor base, while deepening the financial markets in Indonesia.

The Like It program consists of a series of financial literacy activities organised under the auspices of the Coordination Forum for Development Financing through Financial Markets (FKPPPK), with the Ministry of Finance (MoF), Bank Indonesia (BI), Financial Services Authority (OJK) and Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (IDIC) as members. Series 3 was initiated by Bank Indonesia in conjunction with IDIC as the final series to close the Like It program. Series 1, held on 3rd August 2021, entitled “Cross-Generational Investment Literacy”, provided greater understanding of investing in government securities, while Series 2, held on 5th August 2021, entitled “Let’s Invest in the Capital Market”, afforded greater insight concerning investing in the capital market.
