The Government and Bank Indonesia officially launched a commemorative Rp75,000 banknote to celebrate the 75th year of Indonesian independence and coincide with Indonesian Independence Day, today (17/08) in Jakarta. The release and circulation of the commemorative banknote represents an expression of gratitude for national independence and the achievements made during Indonesia’s 75 years of independence. The issue marks recognition of the Rp75,000 banknote as legal tender and a commemorative note in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia.

Representing the Government, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, took the opportunity to assure the public that the commemorative notes were not issued to improve liquidity in order to fund economic activities but to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Indonesian independence. Beyond the expression of gratitude, the release and circulation of the commemorative notes are a symbol of revival and optimism in facing the unprecedented challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic to maintain national development towards the future of Advanced Indonesia. Therefore, the philosophy behind the commemorative notes include gratitude for Indonesia’s 75 years of independence, reinforcing diversity and embracing Indonesia's bright future.

During the online press conference, the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, explained that the philosophy behind the commemorative notes was reflected in the overall design of the banknote. The historical proclamation of independence of the Republic of Indonesia on 17th August 1975 and the various development achievements during 75 years of independence are featured as a form of gratitude towards national independence. The diverse traditional attire and motifs worn by the children portrayed on the bill reflect a spirit of diversity. Meanwhile, the red-and-white satellite, as a bridge towards Golden Indonesia in 2045, denotes optimism for Indonesia's bright future.

The commemorative notes have been enhanced with innovative security features and are constructed from more durable paper materials to ensure that authentic notes are easier to recognise, convenient and secure to use, and difficult to counterfeit. Planned rupiah currency innovation along with periodic refreshes will continue to ensure the rupiah remains a symbol of pride and sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo went on to explain that throughout Indonesia's history, Bank Indonesia has issued three commemorative notes to celebrate the country's 25th, 45th and 50th anniversaries in 1970, 1990 and 1995 respectively. Therefore, the commemorative note issued in 2020 is the fourth such banknote released to celebrate Indonesian independence.

The release and circulation of the commemorative Rp75,000 banknote is in accordance with the Currency Act as part of the current plans to fulfil public demand for currency in 2020, while complying with good governance pursuant to prevailing laws. Preparations for the release were conducted by Bank Indonesia through close coordination with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of State Secretariat as well as Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Based on the coordinated efforts, the Government issued Presidential Decree No. 13 of 2020, dated 13th April 2020, concerning the Depiction of National Heroes, Dr (H.C.) Ir. Soekarno and Dr (H.C.) Drs Mohammad Hatta, on the Front of the Commemorative Rupiah Note to Celebrate 75 years of Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Furthermore, the release and circulation are also regulated in accordance with Bank Indonesia Regulation (PBI) No. 22/11/PBI/2020, dated 14th August 2020, concerning the Release and Circulation of the 75,000 Denomination Commemorative Rupiah Note Celebrating 75 Years of Indonesian Independence issued in 2020.

The commemorative note is available for purchase to all Indonesian residents holding an Indonesian identity card (KTP) online at https://pintar.bi.go.id. Sales are limited to one banknote per customer starting from 15.00 WIB on 17th August 2020. From 1st October 2020, however, banknotes may be exchanged at Bank Indonesia branches and cooperating commercial banks, while maintaining strict adherence to health protocols set by the Government to prevent COVID-19 transmission.
