The latest Banking Survey conducted by Bank Indonesia indicated faster quarterly growth of new loans disbursed by the banking industry in the second and third quarters of 2019. The gains were reflected by an increase in the weighted net balance (WNB) of demand for new loans to 78.3% in the second quarter of 2019 from 57.8% in the previous period. Survey respondents expected investment loans and consumer loans to drive new growth. In the third quarter of 2019, the banking industry predicted a further increase in growth of new loans, induced by economic optimism surrounding post-election political stability along with comparatively low credit risk.

Consistent with the predicted uptick of new loans disbursed by the banking industry, the banks are expected to relax lending standards in the third quarter of 2019, as confirmed by a lower Lending Standards Index of 0.8% compared with 12.4% in the previous period. The banks will ease lending standards on all loan types through lower maturity restrictions and collateral requirements.

The latest Banking Survey also revealed how respondents remained upbeat concerning credit growth as a whole in 2019. The banking industry now predicts loan growth in 2019 to reach 11.2%, with optimism boosted by relatively low credit risk, coupled with a solid Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) and adequate bank liquidity.

Comprehensive survey results are posted under the Banking Survey on the official Bank Indonesia website.
