Retail Sales Survey March 2024: Solid Retail Sales Expected to Persist

Siaran Pers
Press Releases

Respondents of the latest Retail Sales Survey conducted by Bank Indonesia expect solid retail sales performance to persist in March 2024, as reflected by 3.5% (yoy) growth in the Real Sales Index (RSI) to a level of 222.8, driven by higher retail sales of Clothing, Spare Parts and Accessories, as well as Automotive Fuel. On a monthly basis, the RSI index recorded 4.1% (mtm) growth in the reporting period in response to increasing community activity during the holy month of Ramadan and ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr festive period, accompanied by discount pricing strategies.  All commodity groups are estimated to be in the expansion zone, led by Information and Communication Equipment, followed by Clothing and Other Household Equipment.

In February 2024, the RSI index recorded 6.4% (yoy) growth to reach 214.1, boosted by higher retail sales of Food, Beverages, and Tobacco, coupled with a shallower retail sales contraction affecting Information and Communication Equipment as well as Cultural and Recreational Goods. On a monthly basis, retail sales expanded 1.7% (mtm) in the reporting period, primarily supported by Food, Beverages, and Tobacco, Information and Communication Equipment, as well as Cultural and Recreational Goods given increasing community activity during the Chinese New Year, General Election 2024, and ahead of Ramadan.

In terms of prices, respondents predict a decrease in the Price Expectations Index (PEI) in May and August 2024 from 165.9 and 146.7 to reach 146.1 and 136.9 respectively, with lower prices in May 2024 primarily stemming from the normalization of community activity after the Eid-ul-Fitr festive period.

More information concerning the Retail Sales Survey is accessible via the official Bank Indonesia website.
