Trade Surplus Maintained in June 2021

Government Press Release

No.23/ 172 /DKom

Based on data from BPS-Statistics Indonesia, Indonesia recorded a narrower trade surplus in June 2021, totalling USD1.32 billion compared with USD2.70 billion the month earlier. Indonesia has, therefore, maintained a trade surplus since May 2020.  Overall, Indonesia's trade balance for the period from January-June 2021 recorded an USD11.86 billion surplus, well above the USD5.43 billion surplus recorded in the first semester of 2020. Bank Indonesia is confident the ongoing trade surplus contributes to preserving external economic resilience in Indonesia.  Bank Indonesia will continue to strengthen policy synergy with the Government and other relevant authorities moving forward to bolster economic recovery momentum.

The trade surplus recorded in June 2021 was affected by a sustained non-oil and gas trade surplus, despite shrinking to USD2.3 billion from USD3.79 billion in May 2021.  Such developments were influenced by a larger increase of non-oil and gas imports than non-oil and gas exports.  Non-oil and gas exports climbed to USD17.31 billion in June 2021 from USD15.96 billion a month earlier, boosted by exports of natural resources, such as metal ore, as well as manufacturing products, including iron and steel, motor vehicles and components as well as electrical machinery, apparatus and equipment. Based on destination country, non-oil and gas exports bound for China, United States and Japan surged in response to recovering global demand.  On the other hand, non-oil and gas imports recorded broad-based gains across all components given recent domestic economic activity.  Meanwhile, the oil and gas trade deficit remained comparatively stable at USD1.07 billion in June 2021 compared with USD1.09 billion in May 2021, impacted by solid oil and gas export and import activity.
