The Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. DR. Boediono, officially issued the newly designed Rp1,000 coin, 2010 issue, and Rp10,000 banknote at the Bank Indonesia Building in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday 20th July 2010. Present at the launch were Acting Governor of Bank Indonesia, Darmin Nasution, the Governor of West Java, Ahmad Heryawan and the Governor of South Sumatra, Alex Noerdin to receive replicas of the new money. In a brief statement, Darmin Nasution mentioned that the escalation in economic activity requires support from adequate Rupiah availability with easily recognizable characteristics of authenticity in order to facilitate transactional activity.

The new Rp1,000 denominated coins feature Garuda Pancasila on the front. Meanwhile, on the flip side of the coin is the traditional bamboo musical instrument known locally as angklung with Gedung Sate, Bandung – West Java in the background. The coin is silver in color and made from nickel-plated steel. "The choice of featuring the traditional musical instrument, the angklung, is a form of national cultural preservation. Similarly, the depiction of Gedung Sate in Bandung – West Java helps preserve the historical Indonesian building," added Darmin.

The change to the Rp10,000 denominated banknote aims to optimize, or upgrade, the function of the design element, in particular moving away from the existing reddish purple to a bluish purple. Despite several changes to the security features, the major design elements, for example the type of paper, the main image and the dimensions of the new note remain unchanged. "The existing design of the Rp10,000 denominated banknote will remain legal tender until it is withdrawn from circulation by Bank Indonesia" confirmed Darmin.

Other changes to the Rp10,000 denominated banknote are as follows:

  1. Additional security elements in the form of rainbow printing in a pentagon shape, which has the effect of changing color (rainbow effect) when observed from certain angles, on the right-hand side of the main image;

  2. Additional small red rings filled in white scattered on the right-hand side of the main image;

  3. A change to the blind code, consisting of a circle that was previously invisible, which is now visible and noticeable to the touch (intaglio printmaking), positioned on the right-hand side of the main image;

  4. Discontinuation of Optically Variable Ink in the shape of an octagon, which changed from green to blue when viewed from different angles. Instead opting for the BI design logo framed by an ornament from the Palembang region, which does not change color (offset printing), positioned on the bottom right-hand side of the note.

Information regarding the characteristics of the new designs are available from Bank Indonesia’s website, www.bi.go.id.
